ORIENTAL RUG ZINE

ABOUT OUR LOGO

I hope you noticed our logo. In the foreground, sheep graze contentedly, graced with coats of many colors, and designs. Their cousins in the background, owning  (like Pat Nixon) only plain wool coats, seem to watch them with envy. We have Jack Simantob of Art Resources in West Hollywood, California to thank for it. He  conceived the image in Atlanta, Georgia at an oriental rug trade show. While he was busy selling one-of-a-kind, naturally-dyed rugs of his own creation, he noticed neighboring rug importers with ho-hum, synthetically-dyed goods manning lonesome booths. They seemed to look on enviously.

I am tickled by the image. To me it represents the renaissance of rug-making at the end of the 20th century. But, more than that, I cannot wait for the opportunity to show a slide of these rug-adorned sheep to a group that has come to learn about oriental rugs and to explain seriously to them that This is how rugs are made. First you have to catch the right sheep, and then you have to be very careful as you shear it.

Alas, I don't feel right asking Jack for the permanent use of the image. Be sure to read about our contest to replace it as our logo. You might win $150. Ed
