MARCH 1972
Vol.1, No.2

what, in 1972, we knew as penjereliks:

“The term Leon Norell used is simply a Persian description of the size and has nothing to do with any kind of Turkmen usage. It is probably best to avoid it entirely and simply use the word "torba."

Since [the newsletter] was written I've visited Turkmenistan and have found for certain that they are the kinds of things woven around Ashkabad.”...M.E.

Let the record show that The Oriental Rug Company of Berkeley was offering "Gabas" (we would spell them "gabbeh" today) in March of 1972 as  follows:

5. 9 by 8.1  ft. ..................  $235.00
3.10 by 7.1 ft.  .................. $140.00
1.10 by 3.5 ft   .................. $  30.00

It’s hard to argue with the price - though most likely some customers did. But it must be said that probably never in history have gabbehs been as good as the best of  those woven and offered today.
